|Mariska Hargitay has a vested interest in making it legal. |
The Law & Order: SVU star recently got engaged to boyfriend Peter Hermann, who has a recurring role on the show.
No word on when the small-screen pair will walk down the aisle. However, her publicist denied a New York tabloid report that claimed the actress had to shell out for her own engagement ring since her salary dwarfs her betrothed's.
Hargitay, 40, is the daughter of the late Jayne Mansfield and bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay. She has headlined Law & Order: SVU since the show launched in 1999. As Detective Olivia Benson, she and partner Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) work for the elite Special Victims Unit of the New York Police Department, solving crimes that often fall into the category of bizarre.
Hermann began appearing as a series regular in 2002, playing the role of attorney Trevor Langen.
Though SVU was originally conceived as a spinoff of Dick Wolf's powerhouse series Law & Order, it quickly established strong ratings and positive reviews on its own merit.
In its fifth season, the show is holding down the number 25 slot in ratings, and averaging 12.5 million viewers each week, per Nielsen Media Research.
Aside from her SVU role, Hargitay has had a recurring role on ER and recently signed on to the Lifetime original movie Plain Truth, about a hard-hitting lawyer who takes on the case of an 18-year-old Amish woman accused of murder.
The made-for-TV pic is set to premiere later this year.
Hermann next appears in indie flick Duane Incarnate, which is currently in post-production. The film has been chosen to compete in the Tribeca Film Festival this year.
